Dawn Brooks and Sekou Canty
A native of Ohio, Mrs. Brooks teaches Physical Education and Middle School Health and serves as Collinswood’s Athletic Director. She is a liaison for our students’ participation in Middle School Sports. With 17 years of teaching and coaching experience, Mrs. Brooks teaches our kids physical fitness and health. She earned degrees from Glenville State College, Armstrong Atlantic University, and University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Elementary Physical Education Syllabus
Physical Education
We will be learning a variety of movement skills and concepts through fun physical activities. Our activities will be based on the required state standards established by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. We look forward to having a great and exciting year in Physical Education!
Units of Instruction
Locomotor and manipulative skills-This unit includes activities that are designed to develop and reinforce several locomotor and manipulative skills. All of the basic locomotor skills, static and dynamic balancing, as well as underhand tossing, rolling, and catching are addressed. Other learning outcomes are also addressed within the unit’s activities.
Personal and Social responsibility-This unit includes activities that are designed to develop and reinforce several personal and social skills associated with responsible behavior. Safety, working independently, following directions and rules, as well as sharing space and equipment are the primary skills emphasized.
Ball Handling and Dribbling skills-This unit introduces children to ball handling skills and movement concepts most often associated with the sport of basketball. Hand dribbling, passing, and receiving (catching) are the primary skills emphasized.
Foot skills-This unit introduces children to the foot skills and movement concepts most often associated with the sport of soccer. Foot dribbling, kicking, passing, and receiving (trapping) are the primary skills emphasized. Volleying and Striking skills-This unit introduces students to the basics of volleying and striking through developmental play. Striking with the hand is followed by striking with a short- handled paddle, preparing students to progress toward paddle and racquet activities at the intermediate level.
